An apparatus for tension monitoring of a chain of a scraper conveyor, comprising a stress sensor (1) mounted on a side surface of a sprocket tooth and used for measuring sprocket tooth stress data of a chain under different tensions during an operating process of a scraper conveyor. The stress sensor (1) is further connected to a wireless sending apparatus (2) to send the measured sprocket tooth stress data to a wireless receiving apparatus (3) by means of wireless transmission. The wireless receiving apparatus (3) transmits the received data to an industrial personal computer by means of a USB interface. The apparatus converts the tension monitoring of the chain of the scraper conveyor into real-time detection of sprocket stress, so that related workers can obtain the tension data of the chain of the scraper conveyor in real time, and can determine, on the basis of the collected stress data, whether the tension of the chain exceeds a limit, whether chain breakage occurs, and the specific chain in which the chain breakage occurs. Also provided is a method for tension monitoring of a chain of a scraper conveyor.
