It is intended to provide a high-versatility apparatus for treating fat-containing wastewater whereby fat in a grease trap can be decomposed and treated advantageously from the viewpoints of cost and maintenance, and a method of efficiently decomposing and treating fat in a grease trap. An apparatus (100) for treating fat-containing wastewater to be located outside of a grease trap, whereby fat in the fat-containing wastewater in the grease trap is decomposed and treated by the actions of immobilized lipase E and a microorganism capable of metabolizing organic matters, comprising a container (60) provided with an inlet (61) for supplying the fat-containing wastewater with a large fat content that has been taken out by sucking and pooled in the upper layer of the grease trap and an outlet (62) that is designed so as to allow the discharge of the decomposed and treated wastewater while keeping a portion thereof in the container, an enzyme holder (70) carrying the immobilized lipase E which is located in the container (60) and allows free passage of the fat-containing wastewater while preventing wash out, and a stirrer (75) for stirring the fat-containing wastewater in the container (60).
