An aqueous coating comprising 37-63wt% silica sol, 35-61wt% pigments and appropriate amount of assistants, and the preparing method thereof are disclosed, wherein the amount of silica in silica sol is 10-18wt% of the total aqueous coating. The assistants comprise dispersing agent and thickening agent. The amount of the dispersing agent is chosen to make the pigments stably and uniformly dispersed, and the amount of the thickening agent is chosen to make the coating having proper viscosity. The preparing method is as following: a) proper amounts of silica sol and dispersing agent are blended; b) proper amount of pigments is prepared and vapor is introduced in the pigments to make the pigments be fully wetting; c) the material obtained from step b) is slowly added into the liquid obtained from step a) under stirring, after milling and filtering, the thickening agent is added to give the resultant product. The aqueous coating with silica sol as film-forming materials has the advantages of saving the resource of oil, reducing the production cost, and being environment-friendly.
