A process for producing an aqueous pigment dispersion, comprising the milling step of milling a mixture containing (a) C.I. pigment violet 23, (b) styrene-acrylic acid copolymer of 50 to 300 mgKOH/g acid value, (c) alkali metal hydroxide, (d) water and (e) wetting agent to thereby obtain a colored milling product, and the dispersion step of dispersing the colored milling product in an aqueous medium by means of a dispersing machine using media, wherein in the milling step, the mass ratio of component (b)/component (a) is in the range of 0.15 to 0.45 while in the first half of the milling step, the mass ratio of component (d)/component (a) is in the range of 0.04 to 0.42, and wherein in the dispersion step, the viscosity change of dispersed matter is within 10%.
