Abstract:
Provided is a process for producing an aqueous polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) emulsion which exhibits high emulsion stability and generates little environmental load and which can provide heat-resistant moldings.
A process for the production of an aqueous PTFE emulsion by emulsion-polymerizing tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) using at least one fluorine-containing emulsifying agent selected from the group consisting of fluorine-containing carboxylic acids and salts thereof, each fluorine-containing carboxylic acid having 4 to 8 carbon atoms and containing 1 to 4 etheric oxygen atoms in the main chain, to form an aqueous emulsion containing PTFE microparticles having a mean primary particle diameter of 0.1 to 0.3μm, wherein when initiating the emulsion polymerization of TFE, (a) a (polyfluoroalkyl)ethylene represented by the general formula: CH2=CH-Rf1 and/or (b) a comonomer that exhibits a monomer reactivity ratio (rTFE) of 0.1 to 8 in the copolymerization with TFE is incorporated into the emulsion polymerization system so as to give finally a comonomer (b) content of 0.001 to 0.01% by mass relative to the quantity of PTFE produced.
