Abstract:
Arcade game machine using pre-defined coins with the help of the coin insertion (1) and dispensary (5) devices installed onto the device frame (7), having field gates (3) set on a playing field (2). These are situated behind a vertically or close to vertically installed transparent surface (8). The surface of the playing field (2) on which the coin passes behind the transparent surface (8) is a monitor (4) the field gates (3) are installed in front or underneath of. The playing field ideally consists of a transparent, flat surface (2) installed in front of the monitor (4). The reward is calculated by electronic calculation. The trajectory of the coin is ideally observed by sensors (9).

1. Arcade game machine using pre-defmed coins with the help of the coin insertion (1) and dispensary (5) devices installed onto the device frame (7), having field gates (3) set on a playing field (2) situated behind a vertically or close to vertically installed transparent surface (8), described by that the surface of the playing field (2) on which the coin passes behind the transparent surface (8) is a monitor (4) the field gates (3) are installed in front or underneath of.

2. As per Claim 1 an arcade game with a monitor (4) installed as the background of the playing field (2), described by that the playing field ideally consists of a transparent, flat surface (2) installed in front of the monitor (4).

3. As per either Claim 1. or 2., an arcade game with a monitor (4) installed as the background of the playing field (2), described by that the software allows for the implementation of unlimited graphics and themes.

4. As per Claim 1., an arcade game with a monitor (4) installed as the background of the playing field (2), described by that an electronic calculation of the reward is implemented, and it is dispensed through a money dispensary device.

5. As per Claim 1., an arcade game with a monitor (4) installed as the background of the playing field (2), described by that the trajectory of the coin is ideally observed by sensors (9).

Description:
Arcade game machine

The subject matter to be protected by the utility model is a modem arcade machine which has redesigned traditional skill-based games by exploiting the new options made possible by current technological advances. The machine is operated by coins, while information relevant to the player can be read from a digital monitor that serves simultaneously as the field of play. The device can be utilized both for entertainment and for enhancing skill enhancement. The monitor implemented as the surface of the device provides limitless replay value. Operation is made significantly more predictable by electronic money handling. A variety of coin-operated devices exist that display different types of games. Arcade games that most closely resemble our invention were first used in Finland in 1920s, the goal of those being to pass a coin into a selected opening. The device rewarded the player for a successful attempt with multiple coins while a failed attempt resulted in the coin used being lost. The game had been first implemented as a device in the form of the PAYAZZO (Pajatso) arcade machine, mostly by mechanical means. The dated technology is characterised by the transparency of the device’s front panel that enabled the player to watch the trajectory of the coin. The reward columns on the playing field situated behind the transparent panel were located in a single line. The coin required to operate the game was to be inserted onto the playing field by the player through a metal loop. Coins available for payouts could be observed through the transparent front panel on traditional, fully mechanical devices. Players could therefore estimate whether there were enough coins for potential reward payouts.

A substantial difference between earlier games and the arcade game described herein is in the background of the playing field. While earlier games provided a constant, painted or patterned background, the new construction provides a digital display for the background, in front of which openings or gates are situated. The only similarity between earlier and newly designed games is in the principles of operation. After the coin or token is passed onto the playing field, the goal is to reach a pre-selected opening or gate. Therefore, by utilising a digital display a dynamic arcade game can be created which can constantly be developed and modified via graphical means or software to meet different needs and regulations.

A further similarity between the machines of different construction is that the player places the coin with the help of a device (a metal loop or a pendulum) onto the playing field and a rule set in advance is used to determine the amount of the reward if the coin is successfully passed into the appropriate opening. The detection of a particular gate may be achieved via sensors or by fully mechanized means: a lever. Earlier machines implement a course of play and rules set by the strategy and design observed at the time of construction which cannot be later changed by either the player or the owner.

The utility model is based on recognising that the classic, mechanically operated machines are devices implementing a completely rigid, predetermined design and set of rules - in their case the coin, after being placed onto the playing field, passes through gates or openings set previously on a solid surface, thus, determination of the reward is subject of rules that can not be changed later. This might be realised by adding the coin to an actual column of coins or by, based on sensors installed into the gates or openings, actual payout from the hopper. Overall, that design results in a completely static game being implemented, that our design offers to change by making possible to modify the rules and gates before commencing play.

Our aim is to make the classic arcade game more enjoyable and more secure in its operation by exploiting the advances of modem technology, thus eliminating the deficiencies of earlier designs.

The subject matter to be protected by the utility model is, therefore, a modem arcade game equipped with a monitor. Practically it consists of a device body that encases the various structural units. The frame is ideally constmcted from metal, and a transparent glass sheet ensures that both the trajectory of the coin and the monitor placed behind the playing field could be observed. The electrical devices situated in the device frame operate the display of graphical elements on the monitor situated behind the transparent glass, the detection of the optical gates, the acceptance and payout operations of coins (tokens) and other controlling softwares. The player may select between themes loaded onto the machine by pressing buttons on the machine. Moreover, backlit buttons provide a means to change the operational settings of the game. The coin or token, after being put into play, is inserted between two transparent surfaces, then travels further towards the openings or gates situated in front of or beneath the monitor. The innovative solution required for the protection of utility model is, thus, a monitor/digital display unit. The monitor provides the visualisation appropriate for the theme of the game and relays the player the reward value of particular field gates. The field gates are situated parallel to the plane of the playing field. The reward values of various field gates may be changed according to the theme set by the player. The playing field is constructed from various materials: its front panel is a transparent surface, ideally of glass or plexiglas, while its back plane is a monitor, or, ideally a transparent, flat protective surface. These two planes are to be placed at such a distance from each other which secures a path for the trajectory of the coin. The monitor relays the player the digital elements of the various themed game software, while the transparent front panel enables the observation of the trajectory of the coin. The width of the playing field is greater than the width of the coin, which ensures its unhampered movement. The digital monitor situated on the playing field displays the reward values of the winning columns via various graphical means. The player is therefore offered a way to succeed in getting the coins reach a particular so-called“steel gate” of the player’s choosing by the field of play being transparent and provided a digital screen.

Another beneficial solution of the utility model is that the player receives the reward - which is to be calculated electronically - via the payment device. Therefore obstruction or depletion which may occur via traditional mechanical payment methods are eliminated.

An attractive implementation of the utility model and its method of operation is described by a general schematic of the machine frame and the playing field behind the glass surface, where Schematic 1 represents the structural design of the machine, while Schematic 2 represents the design of the playing field.

The arcade game equipped with a playing field (2) and a monitor (4) for background and its operation is presented as a whole in order to facilitate its comprehension, underlining its optimal construction as per the utility model and the placement of the monitor (4). Schematic 1 shows an arcade game machine in one of its optimal ways of construction, for the operation of which one (1) coin of predetermined value is needed which the player inserts by means of one (1) coin acceptance device and by this action commences the operation of the arcade game. The coin inserted enters play instantly, by being placed into a special, purpose-built launching device (7) installed in the interior of the device frame. The player launches the coin with a force of the player’s choosing to a calculated distance with the help of a metal loop installed onto the side of a traditional launching device utilised in arcades. As there is a transparent surface (8) between the playing field and the user, the trajectory of the coin can be observed. Relay of information on the operation of the arcade, and the reward values of various field gates (3) is provided by the digital monitor (4). The monitor enables the implementation of various themed game software in order to provide diverse goals and game experience. Consequently the player may set an individualised goal which can be completed in accordance with the player’s skill. Seven field gates (3) should be ideally placed on the playing field which serve as goals, while the trajectory of the coin is monitored by (optical) sensors (9). This innovative solution - ie. a monitor (4) situated behind the coin - helps the player with decision-making, while not influencing the course of play. The user is provided information mostly on the rewards offered by the various field gates (3) and other potential events on the monitor (4). Interpretation of the information relayed and the operation of the game is facilitated by various graphical elements, thus the display monitor (4) serves also as a visualisation device enriching the game experience. The coin then either falls into one of the openings or falls between them, which depends on its trajectory determined by the force of the launch and the rigid mechanical construction and the pre-determined position of the field gates (3). Coins are collected into a pot after every game. Calculating the rewards is done electronically, which eliminates all uncertainties resulting from the outdated solution of payment being implemented via mechanical means in the traditional designs. Schematic 2 shows the playing field (2), which is situated behind the transparent surface (8) shown on Schematic 1. The operator of the arcade sets the position of the field gates (3) which is then set for the operation of the arcade until further modifications.

In the aforementioned attractive example design not only may the player observe the trajectory of the coin having been passed between two transparent solid surfaces but may select between various game themes with the help of the monitor (4) situated behind the transparent surface. Thus, on a device constructed as per the above description, various rules, graphical implementations and themes may be developed by means of software, of which the player may select the preferred one. The arcade therefore has the benefit that it may be developed easily and enables an even more visual game experience thanks to its digital implementation. A further benefit of the newly designed arcade is that with the help of its transparent surfaces and the digital display, the manufacturer may observe different legislations and develop various themes accordingly. Moreover, the player may select between the various software- implemented themes. The arcade is distributed with several games installed, therefore players may select between several games in real time.
