The invention provides artificial leather having texture very similar to that of natural leather and a base for the artificial leather at low cost. The processes for the production of the artificial leather and the base are characterized by piling up successively a dry surfacing web produced by a wet process and comprising both an aggregate of fibers having a fineness of 1 denier or below, a fiber length of 3 to 15mm and a basis weight of 20 to 150g/m² and a water-soluble polymer applied thereto, a fabric made of fiber having a fineness of 1 denier or above and having an air permeability of 3 to 250 cm³/cm² ⋅ s as determined according to JIS-L1096A, and a dry backing web produced by a wet process and comprising both an aggregate of fibers having a fineness larger than that of the surfacing web, a fiber length of 5 to 25 mm and a basis weight of 50 to 200g/m² and a water-soluble polymer applied thereto at a density higher than that of the surfacing web, subjecting the resulting laminate to water jet entanglement, and impregnating the obtained nonwoven fabric with an elastic polymer solution.
