An attenuation coefficient switching type hydraulic damper capable of automatically switching an attenuation coefficient without requiring any supply of energy from the outside and surely developing an energy absorbing capability in excess of that of a normal hydraulic damper at all times, wherein while a piston (3) is moving in a direction A, an open/close operating valve (11), i.e., a flow control valve (10) is closed by a mechanical drive means (30) comprising a linear gear (31) and a crank mechanism (32) to set the attenuation coefficient to the maximum valve Cmax, when the movement direction of the piston (3) is changed to a direction B at the maximum point of amplitude on the left side, the flow control valve (10) is temporarily opened by the mechanical drive means (30) to remove a load so as to set the attenuation coefficient to the minimum value Cmin, when the piston (3) is further moved to a direction B, the flow control valve (10) is closed again by the mechanical drive means (30) to return the attenuation coefficient to the maximum value Cmax, the piston (3) is moved in the same manner at the maximum point of amplitude on the right side as at the maximum point of amplitude on the left side, and the movements above are repeated for seismic control.
