Provided is an authentication device that can effectively authenticate a user.　According to an embodiment, an authentication device that authenticates a user comprises a biometric sensor, a storage unit, a communication interface, a detection mechanism, and a processor. The biometric sensor acquires biometric information. The storage unit stores authentication information. The communication interface transmits/receives data to/from an external device. The detection mechanism detects the attachment/removal of the authentication device. The processor: authenticates a user by using biometric information acquired by the biometric sensor; upon successful authentication of the user, stores the authentication information in the storage unit, and turns off the authentication device; activates the authentication device by using power from the communication interface when the communication interface receives a magnetic field from the external device; upon receiving an authentication command through the communication interface and if the authentication information is stored by the storage unit, transmits an authentication signal indicating that the authentication was successful to the external device through the communication interface; and deletes the authentication information from the storage unit once the detection mechanism detects that the authentication device has been removed from the user.
