This automatic handling apparatus is characterized by being provided with: a suction head for applying suction to and holding workpieces; an arm which is connected to the suction head, and which moves the suction head; and a stage upon which the workpieces to be conveyed to workpiece-holding holes of a carrier are placed. The automatic handling apparatus is further characterized in that: the suction head is provided with a movable part capable of moving within a horizontal plane with respect to a main body of the suction head; the movable part is capable of applying suction to and holding the workpieces, and is provided with a plurality of positioning pins which extend vertically downwards; and when a workpiece held by the movable part is to be inserted into a workpiece-holding hole of the carrier, the plurality of positioning pins are fitted to the bottoms of teeth of a gear which are located at the outer periphery of the carrier, and the movable part is moved within the horizontal plane, and, as a result, the carrier is pressed towards the side of a sun gear, the position and orientation of the carrier are fixed, and the held workpiece is carried into the holding hole of the carrier. Accordingly, provided is an automatic handling apparatus with which workpieces can be inexpensively and accurately inserted into workpiece-holding holes of a carrier.
