Abstract:
An automobile body frame comprises a space frame made of strength elements manufactured from metal profiles and forming a front portion of the frame, a rear portion of the frame, and lateral structures. The front portion of the frame includes a lower structure and an upper structure (1 and 2) connected by strength elements, each of which structures includes longitudinal and transverse strength elements. The longitudinal and transverse elements form an engine compartment of the frame. The rear portion of the frame includes a rear wall (25) and, connected thereto, a lower structure (26). The lateral structures (17) connect the front and rear portions of the frame, and also form a cardan tunnel. The cardan tunnel is disposed between the lateral structures and connected by strength elements to the front and rear portions of the frame. The central planes of the engine compartment of the frame and of the cardan tunnel are offset from the central vertical plane of the frame. This makes it possible to increase the space available to the driver and improve the weight distribution of the automobile along the longitudinal axis.
