Provided are an auxiliary gantry for an MRI apparatus and a method for controlling an MRI apparatus which enable an MRI apparatus which targets a specific nucleus to acquire a resonance signal like an MRI signal or an NMR signal for imaging a human body using atoms other than a specific atom. This auxiliary gantry for an MRI apparatus is for changing the resonance frequency of an MRI apparatus, and has: a detection coil for detecting an excitation pulse of a first frequency output from an MRI apparatus transmission coil of the MRI apparatus; an excitation pulse frequency conversion unit for converting the excitation pulse of a first frequency detected by the detection coil to an excitation pulse of a second frequency different from the first frequency; a transmission coil for transmitting, to a subject, the excitation pulse of a second frequency converted by the excitation pulse frequency conversion unit; a reception coil for receiving a resonance signal emitted from the subject in response to the excitation pulse of a second frequency; a signal extraction unit for extracting a resonance signal of the first frequency from a mixed signal obtained by mixing the resonance signal received by the reception coil and a high frequency signal of a third frequency; and a resonance signal transmission coil for transmitting the resonance signal of the first frequency extracted by the signal extraction unit to an MRI apparatus reception coil of the MRI apparatus.
