The purpose of the present invention is to provide azo compounds that are useful as a dichroic pigment for use in a polarizing plate that has excellent polarizing performance and durability and that causes little color leakage in the visible light region and in a neutral-gray polarizing plate that is for onboard use in a vehicle and that uses the abovementioned polarizing plate. An azo compound represented by formula (1) or a salt thereof. (In formula (1), one or more of R1-R6 are each independently a C1-4 alkoxy group that has a sulfo group, the other R1 and R2 are each independently a hydrogen atom, a sulfo group, a carboxy group, a C1-4 alkyl group, a C1-4 alkoxy group, a halogen group, a nitro group, an amino group, an amino group that is substituted with a C1-4 alkyl group, or an acylamino group that is substituted with a C1-4 alkyl group, and the other R3-R6 are each independently a hydrogen atom, a C1-4 alkyl group, or a C1-4 alkoxy group.)
