A novel alkenylphenol/(meth)acrylic ester copolymer which is suitable for use as an electronic material, especially a resist material, has a unimodal narrow molecular weight distribution, and has a regulated molecular weight and regulated structure; and a process for producing the alkenylphenol copolymer. A dianion comprising a component comprising repeating units represented by general formula (I) is synthesized by anionic polymerization with the aid of an alkali metal or organic alkali metal compound as a polymerization initiator. The dianion is copolymerized with a (meth)acrylic ester derivative represented by general formula (IV) in the presence of lithium chloride. The resultant copolymer is contacted with an acid compound to obtain an alkenylphenol copolymer in which one polymer segment [B] derived from the sytrene derivative and two polymer segments [A] derived from the acrylic acid derivative are bonded together in A-B-A type block arrangement.
