Abstract:
The present invention relates to a back light unit which can implement matrix-type local dimming by using a cholesteric liquid crystal layer capable of switching in each of areas, and a display device including same, and a back light unit according to an embodiment comprises: a light guide plate; a light source disposed at a side surface of the light guide plate to introduce light into the light guide plate; a circularly-polarized-light reflecting layer disposed on the front surface of the light guide plate to reflect a first polarized light component among the components of light output from the light guide plate and allow a second polarized light component to be transmitted therethrough; and a cholesteric liquid crystal layer that is disposed on the front surface of the circularly-polarized-light reflecting layer and includes a plurality of areas, wherein each of the plurality of areas reflects the second polarized light component having passed through the circularly-polarized-light reflecting layer or allows same to be transmitted therethrough according to voltages applied to the areas.
