A backlight device and a control method therefor. The backlight device comprises: a light source component (2), an optical coupling component (1), optical fibers (3), and point light sources (4). The optical fibers (3) are located near edges of the optical coupling component (1). Light from the point light sources (4) can irradiate the tail end of each optical fiber (3), part of the light being emitted from side walls of the optical fibers (3). The light emitted from the light source component (2) and the side walls of the optical fibers (3) are converted into planar light by means of the optical coupling component (1). By disposing the optical fibers (3), whose side walls can emit light, near the edges of the optical coupling component (1), and irradiating the optical coupling component (1) by using the point light sources (4) for light emission, the optical fibers (3) and the light source component (2) are combined to provide a backlight source for the backlight device. In this way, the capability of adjusting the illumination to the edges of the optical coupling component (1) is enhanced, so that the backlight device can flexibly control the display brightness of edges of a screen according to requirements.
