Abstract:

A backlight device capable of luminance control with less degradation in image quality. The device is provided with an illumination section (20) for irradiating illumination light for displaying images to a liquid crystal panel (10) which has a plurality of image display areas and which displays the images by modulating the illumination light irradiated from the back surface for each of the screen display areas according to image signals, and a luminance determination section (30) for determining the light-emitting luminance value of the illumination section (20) and updating the light-emitting state of the illumination section (20) according to the determined light-emitting luminance value. The illumination section (20) has a plurality of light-emitting areas where each of the image display areas is irradiated. The luminance determination section (30) determines the light-emitting luminance value of a light-emitting area where a first image display area is irradiated from the value obtained by weighting first information based on an input image signal of the first image display area and second information based on an input image signal of a second image display area.
