Abstract:
Display characteristics are improved in a backlight scanning system in which scanning dimming elements are successively selected. A backlight (11) comprises: a light guide body (20) which has an optical input face and output face; a light source (21) which is provided on the input face; and scanning dimming elements (23) which are provided on the output face. A backlight controller (16), in each frame and for each scanning line group (Ga, Gb, Gc, Gd and Ge) of a liquid crystal panel (10), modulates selection times of the scanning dimming elements (23) in accordance with an average brightness value of pixel data. As a result, it becomes possible to set the selection time of the scanning dimming element (23b) of the scanning line group (Gb), which has a high average brightness value and requires a large amount of light, to be longer than the selection time of the scanning dimming elements of the other scanning line groups (Ga, Gc, Gd and Ge).
