Abstract:
Provided is a backlight that, even when reduced in thickness, has an exceptional balance between light utilization efficiency and luminance uniformity. The problem is solved by: having a substrate, a plurality of blue light sources positioned discretely on one side of the substrate, and a patterned cholesteric layer positioned on the emission side of the blue light sources; and having the integrated reflectance, at a wavelength of 450 nm, of a portion of the pattered cholesteric layer that overlaps the blue light sources be at least 30% higher than the integrated reflectance of a portion of the pattered cholesteric layer that does not overlap the blue light sources.
