Abstract:
The disclosed backlight system (30) is provided with light-emitting units (31) which emit RGB light and an imaging optical system, and irradiates a liquid crystal panel (37) with light which has passed through the imaging optical system. The liquid crystal panel (37) contains multiple pixels arranged at a pitch (P), wherein each pixel contains multiple picture elements corresponding to each color. The imaging optical system has a first microlens array (MLA1) in which multiple lenses (1A) are arranged at a pitch (P2), and a second microlens array (MLA2) in which multiple lenses (2A) are arranged at a prescribed pitch. The lenses (1A) separate the light emitted from the light-emitting units (31) by RGB and focus said light at a pitch the same as the arrangement pitch of the picture elements, and the lenses (2A), provided in one-to-one correspondence with the picture elements and arranged such that the position where the light passing through the lenses (1A) is collected matches the focus of the lenses (2A), polarize light passing through the lenses (1A) in a direction approximately perpendicular to the display surface of the aforementioned liquid crystal panel and irradiate the same onto the liquid crystal panel (37). By this means, display quality is increased by improving the viewing angle characteristics and sense of resolution while satisfying the need for a high light use efficiency.
