Abstract:
The present invention addresses the problem of providing a backlight unit which enables light emitted from a light source to be incident on a liquid crystal panel with high efficiency. In order to solve this problem, a backlight unit comprises: a light source; a light guiding plate that has a depolarization factor of 40% or less and has a mechanism for directing propagating light toward an emission surface; a reflection plate that is disposed on the side opposite to the emission surface of the light guiding plate or on the emission surface side and has a polarization factor of 30% or less; a circularly polarized light separating plate that is disposed on the emission surface side of the light guiding plate or on the side opposite to the emission surface, and that transmits predetermined circularly polarized light while reflecting other light; and a λ/4 plate that is disposed on the side opposite to the light guiding plate of the circularly polarized light separating plate.
