Abstract:
Provided is a direct backlight which allows the number of LEDs used to be reduced while promoting a reduction in the thickness of the backlight. LEDs (13) are mounted in square lattices on a mounting substrate (11). Protruding parts (15) of a diffusion plate (14) are each arranged above the vicinity of the center of each square lattice unit. A fraction of light emitted from the LEDs (13) that travels in the lateral direction between the mounting substrate (11) and the diffusion plate (14) is captured by the protruding portions (15), refracted and reflected at the interface of the protruding portions (15) and diffused by diffusion particles, as a result of which, the fraction of light is turned into illumination light traveling upward.
