This banknote handling device has: a money receptacle into which banknotes are inserted; a banknote storage part that stores the banknotes inserted through the money receptacle; a first transfer part that connects between the money reception part and the banknote storage part; an identification part which is disposed in the first transfer part and which identifies the banknotes being transferred; a first temporary retention part that is used at least to temporarily retain the banknotes; a second transfer part that connects between the banknote storage part and the first temporary retention part; a detection part which is disposed in the second transfer part and which at least senses the number of banknotes being transferred; a housing part that houses the banknote storage part, the first temporary retention part, the second transfer part, and the detection part in such a manner as to be isolated from the money reception part and the identification part; and a control part that executes, within the housing part, first scrutiny processing in which, after the banknotes stored in the banknote storage part are transferred to the second transfer part so as to be detected by the detection part, the banknotes are temporarily retained in the first temporary retention part and then stored again in the banknote storage part.
