Conventional shelfs, such as book shelfs, are composed of a horizontal bottom plate, two or more side walls extending in vertical direction and a horizontal top plate. The side walls are attached on the top surface of the bottom plate with screws, flanges, angle irons or special fasteners such that the bottom end face of the side wall is on the top surface of the bottom plate. The top plate is attached similarly such that the bottom surface of the top plate is against the top end face side walls. Further one or more shelf plates are arranged between two side wall and between the top and bottom plates. The shelf plates are supported to the side walls with two or more detachable shelf supports such that the position of the shelf plates may be changed.

One of the disadvantages associated with the prior art shelfs is assembly of the shelfs comprising several separate pars is complex. The assembly of the prior art shelfs comprises several assembly steps and requires use of different kinds of tools and a number small fasteners. Assembling of prior art shelf cannot be done by one person but needs at least two persons which is a substantial disadvantage. Furthermore, the prior art shelfs very difficult or close to impossible to disassemble and to assemble again.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

An object of the present invention is to provide base member and shelf system so as to solve or at least alleviate the prior art disadvantages. The objects of the invention are achieved by a base member and a shelf system which are characterized by what is stated in the independent claims 1 and 9.

The preferred embodiments of the invention are disclosed in the dependent claims.

The invention is based on the idea of providing base member for supporting a shelf and forming a joint in the shelf comprising at least one bottom plate and at last two side walls. The base member comprises a base plate having top surface and a bottom surface. The base member also comprises at least one connection part arranged to form a bottom joint between the base plate and a bottom plate of the shelf, the at least one connection part being provided on the top surface of the base plate. The base member further comprises at least one standing support provided to the top surface 32 and arranged to form a side wall joint between the base plate 31 and the side wall 60. The at least one standing support may be base protrusion arranged to protrude from the top surface of the base plate and to form the side wall joint between the base plate and a side wall, or a support aperture provided to the top surface of the base plate and arranged to extend into the base plate for forming the side wall joint between the base plate and a side wall. Accordingly, the at least one connection part is arranged to connect the horizontal bottom plate to the base member and the standing support is arranged to support the vertical side wall in an upright position to the base member. Therefore, the horizontal bottom plate and the vertical side wall are connected and joined together via the base member. Further, the at least one connection part and the at least one standing support may place and hold the horizontal bottom plate and the vertical side wall in place during the assembly.

The top surface of the base plate has length direction and a width direction. In one embodiment of the present invention the at least one connection part and the standing support are spaced apart from each other on the top surface in the width direction of the top surface. This means that the at least one connection part and the standing support are not in same line in the length direction of the top surface. In one embodiment, the at least one connection part and the standing support are spaced apart from each other on the top surface in the length direction of the top surface. This means that the at least one connection part and the standing support are not in same line in the width direction of the top surface. In a still another embodiment, the at least one connection part and the standing support are spaced apart from each other on the top surface in the width and length direction of the top surface. This means that the at least one connection part and the standing support are not in same line in the length and width direction of the top surface. Placing the standing support and the at least one connection part on the top surface of the base plate as mentioned above, enables supporting both the horizontal bottom plate and the vertical side wall directly against the top surface of the base plate.

In one embodiment of the base plate, the top surface may have a side wall support line extending in the length direction of the top surface and the at least one standing support being arranged on the side wall support line. The top surface may further have a first edge portion provided spaced apart from the side wall support line in the width direction of the top surface and extending in the length direction of the top surface. The first edge portion comprising the at least one first connection part. Accordingly, the horizontal bottom plate may be connected to the first edge portion of the base plate and the vertical side wall may be supported to the standing support along the side wall support line spaced apart or adjacent to the first edge portion.

In an alternative embodiment, the top surface may have a first edge portion provided spaced apart from the side wall support line in width direction of the top surface and extending in the length direction of the top surface. The first edge portion comprises at least one first connection part. Furthermore, the top surface may have a second edge portion extending in the length direction of the base plate and the side wall support line is provided to the second edge portion. Accordingly, one horizontal bottom plate may be connected to the first edge portion of the base plate and one vertical side wall may be connected to the second end portion. Thus, the base member may be an end base plate at one end of the shelf.

In a further alterative embodiment, the top surface may have a first edge portion provided spaced apart from the side wall support line in width direction of the top surface and extending in the length direction of the top surface. The first edge portion comprises at least one first connection part. Furthermore, the top surface of the base plate may have a second edge portion provided spaced apart from the side wall support line in width direction of the top surface and extending in the length direction of the top surface. The second edge portion comprising at least one second connection part. In this embodiment, the first and second edges portions are provided in the width direction of the top surface on opposite sides of the side wall support line such that the side wall support line extends between the first and second edge portions. Accordingly, one horizontal bottom plate may be connected to the first edge portion of the base plate and another horizontal bottom plate may be connected to the second edge portion. Further, one vertical side wall may be connected to the base plate and the standing support between the first and second edge portion. There may be central portion between the first and second edge portions. The central portion extending in the length direction of the top surface of the base plate between the first and second edge portions, and the side wall support line is provided on the central portion.
