Abstract:
A battery-can-forming steel sheet 100, which is formed by press forming into a battery can constituting an electrode can (cathode can 11) of an alkali battery 1, comprises a steel sheet serving as a base material (base material steel sheet 102), in which a mean number of crystal grains per unit area (0.25 mm square) of the steel sheet is at least equal to 12.3, onto which a nickel plated layer or a nickel/cobalt alloy plated layer is formed to a thickness of 0.5 to 2.0 µm on the surface of the base material steel sheet that will form the inner surface of the battery can, after which an iron-nickel diffusion layer or an iron-nickel/cobalt alloy diffusion layer is formed by subjecting the nickel plated layer or the nickel/cobalt alloy plated layer to thermal diffusion.
