A device (100) for controllably deflecting a first circularly-polarized (CP) light beam (180) from an incident direction (185) with fast response comprises a polarization selector (PS) (110) to adjust the incident light beam's sense of rotation (251) to a desired one to form a second CP light beam (183), and a polarization grating (PG) (115) to deflect the second CP light beam (183) according to the desired sense of rotation. The PS (110) comprises an optical modulator (160) sandwiched between two quarter-wave plates (120, 150). The optical modulator (160) has at least one ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) half-wave plate (HWP) (130) being reconfigurable in fast axis orientation. The device (100) has a fast response in beam steering due to a short time of reconfiguring the FLC HWP (130). Based on serially cascading multiple units each being this device (100), a beam-steering apparatus (610, 710) having fast response and enhanced steering resolution is obtained. The apparatus (610, 710) is usable for enhancing a field of view in projecting an image.
