A bearing device for supporting a rotating shaft of a rotary machine is provided with a carrier ring having a cylindrical space and enclosing the rotating shaft, and a plurality of bearing pads arrayed in the space along the circumferential direction of the rotating shaft, each of the plurality of bearing pads having an opposing surface that opposes the rotating shaft. The bearing device is configured so that lubricating oil is supplied between the rotating shaft and the opposing surfaces of the bearing pads. The plurality of bearing pads includes at least one load-side pad positioned in a during-operation load direction, which is the load direction of the rotating shaft when the rotary machine is operating, and at least one reverse-load-side pad positioned in a stopped load direction, which is the load direction of the rotating shaft when the rotary machine has stopped, and positioned in a different direction than the during-operation load direction. The area of the opposing surface of the reverse-load-side pad is smaller than the area of the opposing surface of the load-side pad.
