Provided is a biometric authentication system for authentication using registered biometric information, said system comprising: a light source part for irradiating a lifeform with light; an image capture part for capturing a blood vessel image based on the light radiated by the light source part and having passed through the lifeform; a control part for generating biometric information for authentication from the blood vessel image captured by the image capture part; a category selection part for selecting a category associated with the biometric information for authentication on the basis of complementary information including information on the position and orientation of the lifeform acquired when the blood vessel image was captured; and an authentication part for comparing the registered biometric information of the selected category with the biometric information for authentication and executing an authentication process.
