Description:
Bolt and method for making the bolt The present invention relates to a threaded bolt made from a material that can be cast or injection moulded which exhibits a hollow interior.

The bolt previously disclosed in US 1,823,677 A exhibits threads along its outside and is so arranged as to be capable of accommodating electrical connection wires internally in a transverse cavity for clamping in place by means of a nut screwed onto the external threads of the aforementioned bolt. The bolt, which is made from a metallic material, is intended in the first instance for connecting together wires, ropes and the like and is provided for this purpose with the aforementioned central cavity. The bolt is homogeneous apart from the cavity. Rational production of the bolt is thus not possible, and simple handling of it and the compact packing of stored and transported components cannot take place.

The principal object of the present invention is, in the first instance, to make available a threaded bolt of the aforementioned kind, which is simple in its design and construction and, among other things, solves the aforementioned problems.

The aforementioned object is achieved through the present invention by means of a bolt which is characterized essentially in that the bolt is in the form of two shell- shaped bolt halves, in that the bolt exhibits a parting line which extends in the longitudinal direction of the bolt, and in that the two parts of the bolt are so arranged as to be assembled one with the other, in conjunction with which a nut provided with a thread is so arranged as to be capable of being screwed onto the assembled bolt in order to achieve

effective compression of the parts of the bolt one against the other.

The invention also relates to a method for making the aforementioned bolt.

A further object of the invention is to make available a method which permits a bolt in accordance with the invention to be made in a simple and rational fashion, and the surfaces and form of which remain accurate and offer a good fit.

The aforementioned further object is achieved by means of a method in accordance with the present invention, which is characterized essentially in that two shell-shaped bolt halves, which are so arranged together as to form a bolt of the aforementioned kind, are made by casting or injection moulding so that two shell-shaped halves are obtained which extend in the longitudinal direction of the intended bolt, after which the two bolt halves are connected together edge to edge with the help of a threaded nut capable of being screwed on.

The invention is described below as a number of preferred illustrative embodiments, in conjunction with which reference is made to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 shows a plan view of a bolt in accordance with the invention made of plastic by injection moulding and illustrated in a fully unfolded position; Fig. 2 shows the bolt in a position ready for folding; Fig. 3 shows the bolt in an almost fully folded position ; Fig. 4 shows the bolt in a fully assembled position with a nut illustrated in a position ready to be screwed on; Fig. 5 shows the bolt with a nut screwed on ; Fig. 6 shows the bolt viewed at an angle from the rear from its outer pivoting axis side;

Fig. 7 shows a second illustrative embodiment of a bolt formed by two separate divided bolt halves in a position ready for assembly.

The invention is ideally suited to application in the manufacture of threaded bolts 1 made from a material that is capable of casting, for example aluminium or its alloys, or from a material that lends itself to injection moulding, namely a plastic material, for example nylon or other appropriate environmentally types of plastic, although for the sake of simplicity only plastic injection moulding is described below and illustrated in drawings 1-6 as the intended method of manufacture.

A bolt 1 of the aforementioned kind exhibits a hollow interior 2,3 and is formed by two shell-shaped parts 4,5, i. e. two halves of a bolt. The aforementioned intended formed bolt 1 exhibits a parting line 6 which extends in the longitudinal direction 7 of the bolt and is preferably common with the diameter D of the bolt and the adjoining centre 8.

A nut 50 provided with an internal thread 9, preferably the kind of nut which resembles a domed nut with a closing cover 10 at one end 50A, is so arranged as to be capable of being screwed onto the threads 11,12 on the assembled bolt 1 for the purpose of achieving effective compression and retention of the two parts 4,5 of the bolt in a direction 13,14 towards one another when the two parts 4,5 of the bolt are connected together. Present on the other opposing end 50B of the nut is an inclined flange 51, on the outside of which grooves 52 are present for the purpose of making effective contact with a neighbouring part and being held securely thereto.

The two parts 4,5 can be seen in the illustrative embodiment shown in Figs. 1-6 to be connected together in a pivotal fashion about a common interjacent articulation 15, which can be formed by a reduction in the thickness of the

plastic material along the intended folding point along the articulation.

The aforementioned articulation 15 between the two connectable parts 4,5 of the bolt extend in the longitudinal axis 16 of the bolt along one side 17 of the bolt, i. e. for example the curved side of an oblique reinforcing body 20 running between two threaded pins 18,19 facing at right angles in relation to one another.

Provided between the two halves 4,5 of the bolt are means 21,22 which serve the purpose of holding together the parts 4,5 of the bolt. The aforementioned means appropriately consist of a pin 21 and a hole 22, whereby pins 21 project from the shell-shaped walls 23 of one half 4 of the bolt at mutually opposing corners 24 along the edges of one half of the bolt on the peripheral wall 23 of the aforementioned half of the bolt, while a corresponding number of matching holes 22 are situated on the other half 5 of the bolt on its peripheral wall 23A at the corners 25 of the half in reinforced areas 26. It is, of course, also possible to vary the pin/hole in both parts 4,5 of the bolt, so that different categories are present in one and the same half 4, 5. Connecting the bolt 1 together by means of the two halves 4,5 means that the pins 21 come into engagement with the holes 22 in pairs.

A bolt can be straight or, as shown in the example, in the form of an angle bolt 1 and can be provided with supporting stops 27,28 on the bolt's threaded 11,12, projecting and preferably closing pin halves 29,30. Gaps 31, 32 between the threads 11,12 are present at the transition 33,34 between both halves 4,5 of the bolt in the form of a chord-like chamfer 31,32. The aforementioned gaps 31,32 are provided to facilitate the connection of the halves 4,5 of the bolt to one another without any need to undertake any difficult matching of the threads 11,12 in the two halves 4, 5 of the bolt.

A method for making a threaded bolt 1 in accordance with the invention involves making two shell-shaped bolt halves 4,5, which are intended to form a composite bolt 1, by casting metal or injection moulding plastic in accordance with the foregoing.

After having made the two shell-shaped bolt halves 4,5, which extend with their shells in the longitudinal direction 7 of the intended bolt, the two bolt halves 4,5 are connected together edge 35 to edge 36. When the material used is a plastic material, the two bolt halves 4,5 can appropriately be made attached together in a pivotal fashion 13,14 about a common articulation 15.

Holding means 21,22 are produced in the two bolt halves 4,5 in the form of pins 21 projecting from one half 4 of the bolt and matching holes 22 in the other half 5 of the bolt.

Illustrated in Fig. 7 are two bolt halves 104,105, preferably made of a metal suitable for casting, which also exhibit semicircular pin parts with threads 111,112 and with pins and holes 121,122. The two bolt halves 104,105 are made independently of one another and are thus separate from one another, although assembly is effected in this case, too, by pressing the parts 104,105 together in the direction of the arrows 113,114. This composite bolt 101 is also held together securely by means of a number of nuts not shown here.

The invention is not restricted to the illustrative examples of bolts and the method of their manufacture described above and illustrated in the drawings, but may be varied within the scope of the Patent Claims without departing from the idea of invention.
