Abstract:
Provided are: a boron carbide ceramic having excellent mechanical characteristics at a high temperature; and a production method therefor. The present invention includes: a step in which amorphous boron and amorphous carbon are weighed out to a molar ratio of B:C=4:1, and a starting material comprising the amorphous boron and the amorphous carbon is prepared without performing wet blending; a step in which a dispersion treatment is performed on 5-15 vol% (preferably 10-12.5 vol%), in terms of inner percentage and relative to boron carbide synthesised from the starting material, of carbon nanofibres in water or alcohol, and thereafter the carbon nanofibres are added to the starting material, a further dispersion treatment is performed, and thereafter drying is performed and a mixed powder is obtained; and a step in which a moulded body is obtained by die-moulding using the mixed powder, an isostatic pressing treatment is performed on the moulded body, and thereafter the temperature is increased while applying pressure by a pulse electric current pressure sintering method, and the boron carbide ceramic is simultaneously synthesised and sintered.
