A brace member (100) has: an axial force member (10) that can plastically deform; a stiffening pipe (20) through which the axial force member (10) passes and that is for constraining the out-of-plane deformation of the axial force member (10); a cap (30) into which one end (11a) of the axial force member (10) in the longitudinal direction and one end (21a) of the stiffening pipe (20) in the longitudinal direction are installed; a cap clevis (40) that is mounted on the cap (30) so as to extend in the direction opposite of the axial force member (10) and the stiffening pipe (20) and that is a joint for mounting to a building structure; a reinforcing member (50) in which the other end (11b) of the axial force member (10) in the longitudinal direction is installed; and a reinforcing member clevis (6) that is mounted on the reinforcing member (50) so as to extend in the direction opposite of the axial force member (10) and that is a joint for mounting to the building structure; and the brace member is characterized in that the reinforcing member (50) encloses a prescribed range from the other end (20b) of the stiffening pipe (20) in the longitudinal direction.
