Provided are a brake device and a brake control method that can improve the precision of controlling oil cylinder hydraulic pressure. The brake device is provided with: a first brake circuit that connects a master cylinder which generates a brake hydraulic pressure in accordance with a pedal operation and a plurality of wheel cylinders which generate a braking force at the wheels of the vehicle by utilizing the brake hydraulic pressure; a pump that pressurizes brake fluid inside the master cylinder and supplies the pressurized brake fluid to the plurality of wheel cylinders via a second brake circuit that is connected to the first brake circuit; a plurality of pressurization control valves that are provided in the first brake circuit; and a first target upstream hydraulic pressure calculating unit that calculates a target hydraulic pressure of the second brake circuit so that the target hydraulic pressure is larger than the largest value among target wheel cylinder hydraulic pressures of the wheel cylinders, which respectively correspond to the wheels, by an amount equal to the amount of variation that occurs in the hydraulic pressure of the second brake circuit when a pressurization control valve corresponding to a wheel other than the wheel having the largest hydraulic pressure among the plurality of pressurization control values is opened.
