A braking system of a railway vehicle. The system comprises several braking units (1) and a signal system (2), wherein each of the braking units (1) comprises master control braking apparatuses (11), which can control a railway vehicle to perform braking, and several slave braking apparatuses (12); the master control braking apparatuses (11) can monitor and count the total number of faults, in all of the master control braking apparatuses (11) and the slave braking apparatuses (12), of not being capable of braking, and send a fault signal to the signal system (2) if the total number of faults is not less than a first preset number; and the signal system (2) can control each braking unit (1) to perform emergency braking. By means of the structure, when it is detected that the total number of faults is not less than a first preset number, a master control braking apparatus sends a fault signal to a signal system, and the signal system can control each braking unit to perform emergency braking, such that a railway vehicle comes to an emergency stop, thereby preventing the railway vehicle from a safety accident. Further provided is a method for monitoring a braking system of a railway vehicle.
