Specifically disclosed is a branched polyarylene sulfide resin having a melt viscosity of 65 - 450 Pa∙s measured at a temperature of 310°C and a shear rate of 1200 sec-1, maximum drift ratio of 6500 or greater and degree of whiteness of 65 or greater. Further disclosed is a branched polyarylene sulfide resin preferably having a shear rate dependency of 1.4 - 2.6 for melt viscosity or a melt stability of 0.85 - 1.30. Also disclosed is a method for producing a branched polyarylene sulfide resin wherein a polymerization reaction of a sulfur source and a dihaloaromatic compound in an organic amide solvent is brought about at a temperature of 170 - 290°C in the presence of 0.0001 - 0.01 mol of a polyhaloaromatic compound per mol of sulfur source introduced.
