The present invention relates to a button device, which is usable both contactually and contactlessly, and a recognition method thereof and, particularly, to a button device usable both contactually and contactlessly and a recognition method thereof, wherein the device uses a proximity sensor and a contact-type switch and thus can employ both a contact-type input method and a non-contact-type input method, and can replace a conventional contact-type button device. The present invention includes both a proximity sensor and a contact-type switch to provide both a non-contact input method and a contact input method, and thus can be applied without violating laws relating to visually impaired people. In addition, the present invention has an exterior identical to an existing button and thus can minimize confusion or resistance of a user. The present invention requires the replacement of only a button device or the addition of only minimum devices such as a control board and thus can be applied to a place such as an existing elevator with a minimum cost. The present invention can be used by also visually impaired people in an existing manner so that there is no additional inconvenience and a user does not need to become familiar with how the new device works.
