Abstract:
A camera is provided with an image pickup device, a face detecting unit, a focus
detecting unit, a first focusing control unit, a second focusing control unit,
and a control unit. The image pickup device picks up an image. The face detecting
unit detects a face area in the picked-up image display in accordance with an output
of the image pickup device. The focus detecting unit has a plurality of candidate
areas in the picked-up image display and carries out an arithmetic operation
of a defocus quantity from a relative distance of a pair of images based on light
flux passing through an image pickup lens at each candidate area. The first focusing
control unit designates a focus detecting area out of the candidate areas in accordance
with the output of the face detecting unit and carries out a focusing operation
of the image pickup lens in accordance with the defocus quantity of the focus detecting
area. The second focusing control unit carries out an arithmetic operation
of a focus evaluation value in the face area in accordance with the output of the
image pickup device, searches a lens position with the maximum focus evaluation
value and carries out a focusing operation. The control unit makes at least one
of the first and second focusing control units carry out the focusing operation.
