Abstract:
Provided are: a carbon catalyst which has excellent durability; a battery electrode; and a battery. This carbon catalyst comprises: a carbon structure which has a nitrogen desorption amount of 0.75 × 10-5 mol/g or more over the range from 800°C to 1,000°C or a nitrogen desorption amount of 1.20 × 10-5 mol/g or more over the range from 600°C to 1,000°C as determined by a programmed-temperature desorption method that determines the nitrogen desorption amount over the range from 600°C to 1,000°C; a carbon structure which has a pH of 9.2 or more at the isoelectric point of the zeta potential; or a carbon structure which has a ratio of the intensity of a first nitrogen peak that has a peak top within the binding energy range of 398.0 ± 1.0 eV to the intensity of a second nitrogen peak that has a peak top within the binding energy range of 400.5 ± 1.0 eV of 0.620 or more, said peaks being obtained by separating peaks ascribed to the 1s orbital of a nitrogen atom in the photoelectron spectrum obtained by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.
