Abstract:
The objective of the present invention is to accurately measure the length of a carbon electrode by eliminating measuring errors resulting from an external shape of a union that has melted off together with a metal pipe. This carbon electrode length measuring device comprises one metal pipe group which is inserted through at least one carbon electrode and which is configured to reach a lower end of the carbon electrode by joining together a plurality of metal pipes using a taper union having an outer shape in which two tapered surfaces are formed extending continuously from two ends of a central part having a maximum diameter, and a microwave transmitting and receiving device mounted on an upper end of the metal pipe group, wherein: microwaves are transmitted from the transmitting and receiving device; the microwaves propagate through a propagation pathway comprising a cavity and the metal pipe group other than the cavity, the cavity being formed in a lower end portion of the carbon electrode as a result of melting off of the metal pipe or the taper union, or both the metal pipe and the taper union; and microwaves reflected by a molten liquid surface of a material that is being melted are received to obtain the length of the carbon electrode.
