Provided is a carbon material dispersion: that has excellent dispersibility of a carbon material even when the carbon material is contained at a high concentration; and in which the dispersibility is maintained in a stable manner over a long period of time. The present invention provides a carbon material dispersion that contains: at least one type of carbon material selected from the group consisting of carbon black, carbon fibers, carbon nanotubes, graphite, and graphene; water; and a polymer dispersant. The polymer dispersant is a polymer containing 50-80 mass% of a constituent unit (1) that has a carboxy group, at least a portion of which is neutralized by an alkali, and that is derived from a (meth)acrylonitrile, and 20-50 mass% of a constituent unit (2) that is derived from a (meth)acrylic acid (where the total amount of the constituent unit (1) and the constituent unit (2) is assumed to be 100 mass%), and the number average molecular weight of the polymer is 10,000-50,000.
