Abstract:

A carbonaceous refractory which is obtained from starting materials containing in combination a binder leaving a small amount of a residue and a refractory material having a given particle size distribution and which therefore has a highly compacted structure having a high density, can retain a low carbon bond strength, and is excellent in both damage resistance and corrosion resistance. The refractory is obtained from a starting material mixture comprising a refractory material, a carbonaceous material, and a binder, wherein the refractory material contains particles of 0.3 mm or smaller in an amount of up to 30 wt.% and particles of 1 mm or larger in an amount of 20 to 90 wt.% both based on the refractory material and the binder leaves a residue in an amount of 30 wt.% or smaller.
