Abstract:
The melt of cast iron containing a nitrogen−scavenger premixed in the initial material and added through a weighing hopper (26) is cooled and solidified in a cavity mold of a molding apparatus (18) to produce a molded article (B). The free N in the melt is rapidly captured by the nitrogen scavenger before the cooling and solidification are progressed, and nitrides are produced resultantly. The chill structure formed in the surface portion of the molded article (B) is decomposed by subjecting the molded article (B) to a heat treatment. At the last step, the molded article (B) subjected to the heat treatment is machined, thus producing a camshaft (A) as a cast iron member which is a finished article.
