Abstract:
The present invention addresses the problem of providing: a high-durability catalyst carrier that experiences a minimal decline in performance even in low-humidity conditions, an electrode catalyst, an electrode including the catalyst, a membrane electrode assembly having the electrode, and a fuel cell provided with the membrane electrode assembly; and a method for manufacturing the catalyst carrier. The present invention is a catalyst carrier containing a carbonaceous material that has a chain structure in which carbon particles are connected, wherein the catalyst carrier contains titanium compound/carbon composite particles in which carbon encapsulates particles of the titanium compound, the molar ratios of the elements in the catalyst carrier being such that carbon is present in an amount greater than 0 but no higher than 50, nitrogen is present in an amount greater than 0 but no higher than 2, and oxygen is present in an amount greater than 0 but no higher than 3, with titanium being set at 1.
