Title:
CATALYTIC CLEANING PROCESS OF COMBUSTION GASES
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/1999/000176
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
A catalytic cleaning process adapted for instant removal of carbon monoxide (CO) in combustion gases from smoking and other combustion devices, comprising smoking pipes, engines, furnaces, gas turbines, ovens, or incinerators. Tiny or very thin threads of inert, stable, non-toxic, solid metal oxides are distributed in or near the combusting material, in the stream of very hot combustion gases, or in or close to an exhaust manifold. The catalysts which comprise very thin and long threads, loosely intertwined, wool media filters, and which are secured in place, are heated immediately by the combustion gases, and instantly transform carbon monoxide on the catalyst surfaces to harmless carbon dioxide. In occupied rooms or cabs, said thin wool media catalyst filters, when installed in air supply or circulation ducts of air conditioning equipment, will be heated by electric charge, or radiation, or microwaves, immediately when the air fan starts, without much heating of the air stream, and will transform carbon monoxide in the air stream into carbon dioxide, on the catalyst surfaces.

Description:
CATALYTIC CLEANING PROCESS OF COMBIJSTION GASES BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION.

This is the continuation of my research and my patent application S/R No. 08/355,002, filing date 12-6-94, which I herewith make part of my instant invention.

The instant invention relates generally to a process or method to reduce or eliminate harmful gases in smoke, exhaust or other combustion gases or contaminated air, from combustion devises, including from smoking devises, combustion engine, ovens, furnaces, gas turbines, and incinerators, or from occupied spaces, rooms or cabs.

Presently combustion devises have aiso filters to reduce particulate in the smoke or exhaust, and in recent years, autos are furnished with devises, which catalytic ally remove carbon monoxide from the exhaust. But these devises do not function during start and stop or during idling of engine, when the engine produces most of the carbon monoxide.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is not detachable by man ; and has no color, no odor and no taste. But the poisonous effects are devilish The CO gas has 200 times greater attraction to hemoglobin, the red blood cells, than the oxygen (0^3. The CO gas molecule squeezes the red blood cell, and remains connected to it, for the rest of the cell's life.

These red blood cells become duds, which are traveling with the healthy red blood cells in the arteries, from the lungs to the tiniest arteries at each cell of the body. But the duds do not supply blood, nos brin back carbon dioxide (CO2).

Thereby the duds are disturbinu the rhythm, functions and controls of each body cell.

Research during the last years in USA has pointed out that disturbance of the control of the very complicated,on going cell functions, may be a commen cause of some cancer, hearth failures and other serious sicknesses.

Lung cancer death in USA per 100,000 people has increased at an staggering rate over the last 40 years, from 11.3 to 64 in 1995, much more than in other country,. but at about the same rate of increase as. numbers of ctutos in: the USA.

Since the 1950's, there has been a population movement to suburbia with a tremendous increase in numbers and use of- autos, trucks and busses, and big garages, shopping malls, offices and other centers, often with mile wide parking areas, filled with cars and walking people, in all states in the USA. Grid-locked highwayes and roads are daily occurrences, where CO contaminated air is pulled into the cab from below the fender to the people inside.

Not much CO is inhaled, but anough to disturb functions of the body cells, and during years contribute to serious sicknesses and death.

SUMMERY OF THE INVENTION A. prime object of the invention is that of instant removal of carbon monoxide (CO) in smoke and combustion gases from smoking articles and combustion apparatuses, comprising engines, furnaces, turbines, ovens and incinerators, beiore the CO gas is being inhaled and cause harm. This object is achieved in accordance with the invention by a catalytic process. Therein, tiny or very thin treads of stable. solid metal oxide catalysts are used, comprising catalysts of Vanadium pentoxide. Molybdenum trioxide or Rhodium oxides. These very thin thread catalysts are loosely intertwined, fouina a loose wool filter media, to be located in or near the combustion, in or near the manifold, in the stream of the very hot combustion gases.

The tiny or very thin threads of catalysts have very small mass ta surface area, and will therefore heat up instantly from the hot combustion gases as soon as combustion starts. Carbon monoxide molecules are attracted to and land on the tiny catalyst surface areas, and are there transformed to harmless carbon dioxide molecules, which are not attracted and move away. The catalysts and their surfaces do not change or consume themselves. The gas molecules are so small, that many millions could fit in a cubic millimeter, there is room for many thousands of them on the tiny catalyst surfaces In an alternative embodiment of the invention, the object is, that of providing said very thin thread catalyst wool media, in a dielectric filter housing, in air conditioning equipment (AC) for removal of carbon monoxide in, entering or circulating air. in any space, room or cab. In order to increase efficiency of carbon monoxide removal, said very thin thread wool media catalysts will be heated by an electric charge, radiation or microwaves, as soon as the AC fan starts, but not heating the air stream much.

DETAIL DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION Some gases, comprising carbon monoxide (CO) and nitric oxide (NO) are-attracted to the surface of metallic oxide catalysts, and when they are very hot, rapid catalytic process, and molecular transformation of the gases take will take place on the surfaces. But as the temperature falls, the process will slows down fast and it will stop well above ambient temperature. For an efficient transforming of carbon monoxide to harmless carbon dioxide, these catalysts must be places in or near combustion, where carbon monoxide is produced, and they must be stable and not change at the temperatures there. As shown in details in my patent application, which I have referred to and made part of the present invention, the nitric acid moleculeNO brake down on the surface and its oxide 4 is attracted to the carbon monoxide molecule CO. NO + O = N02 carbon dioxide is formed, which is not attracted to the surface and moves away, leaving the surface of the metal free for more processing. The catalysts must be tiny or be of very thin reads so they will be hearted to very high temperatures instantly, and not be vattached to support material, which will act as a heat sink and delay the heating.

Said very thin thread intertwined wool media catalysts can also be used in air-conditioning ducts for automobile cabs, where air supply comes from below the fenders, which often contains carbon monoxide, and from other rooms or spaces, where contaminated air is suspected. Said catalysts must be heated for efficient CO gas removal, by electric charge, radiation or microwaves, or other means, without much heating of the air stream There are innumerous solid metal oxide catalysts, some of which are stable at very high temperature, higher than 2000 F, this is the group of catalysts, from which some of the best suited catalysts has been selected and shown in the invented process.

In smoking articles, the preferred embodiment of said stable, tiny metal oxide catalysts are distributed in the combusting material itself, thus carbon monoxide is being efficiently processed by the catalysts, but they are being used only once and are discarded with the ash and unburned material.

In combustion engines, the preferred embodiment of said stable, very thin thread of metal oxide, intertwined as a loose wool filter media, are secured at the outlet of combustion gases from the manifold, extending partly into it, and several feet into the attached exhaust pipe, for instant and efficient removal of carbon monoxide to harmless carbon dioxide, which are not attracted to the catalyst surfaces, leaving them free for instant and continuous functioning, as soon and as long as hot combustion gases are being produced.

In air supply ducts in air conditioning equipment, the preferred embodiment for said thin thread, loose wool media filter catalysts are secured in part of the duct, to be made of heat insulated carbide, or other dielectric material, and so arrange that an electric charge, radiation or micro waves, can instantly heat said thin thread filter media catalysts to very high temperature, as soon as the supply or circulation air fan start working, without much heating of the air stream.

In smoking pipes and cigars, the preferred embodoment, of said thin thread loose wool filter media catalysts are near the combustion material, attached in the pipe shaH, or the mouth pease of cigars, for transforming carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide.
