Abstract:
A catalytic converter (1) has an inner case (12) for holding a sold cylindrical catalyst carrier (11), and has an outer case (18) for surrounding the downstream opening of the inner case (12). An annular flow passage (25) is formed between the tube-shaped section (21) of the outer case (18) and the outer peripheral surface of the inner case (12). The cup section (22) of the outer case (18) has a dome-shaped end wall (22a) and is provided with a neck section (23) which continues to a circumferential part of the end wall (22a) and which leads to a gas discharge outlet (19). The gas discharge outlet (19) is oriented 90°to the center axis (M) of the catalyst carrier (11), and consequently, the dimension in the direction of the center axis (M) is small. Gas flow resistance is low because a part of exhaust gas reaches the gas discharge outlet (19) after flowing through the annular flow passage (25) in the circumferential direction. The catalyst carrier (11) is warmed by exhaust gas flowing through the annular flow passage (25).
