Abstract:
Secondary alcohols, specifically diols and polyols, are dehydroxylated to the corresponding primary alcohols using hydrogen in the presence of a ruthenium-containing catalyst precursor having the formula {[CpRu(CO)2]2( mu -H)}<+>Q<-> or {[CpRu(CO)(PR'<3>)]2( mu -H)}<+>Q<-> or {[ZRu(L)]2( mu -H)<+>Q<->; wherein Q<-> is a non-coordinating or weakly coordinating nonreactive anion; Cp is an optionally substituted cyclopentadienyl group; R' is selected from hydrogen, alkyl, aryl and aryloxy; Z is hydridotris(3,5-dimenthylpyrazolyl)borate or hydrocarbyl hydridotris (3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)borate; and L is (CO)2 or 1,5-cyclooctadiene.
