Abstract:
 A group of cells is irradiated with excitation light for exciting a first fluorescent substance, fluorescence is detected, and position information about a cell in which fluorescence was detected is acquired (first step). At this time, a first detection area is scanned, the length of the first detection area in a direction orthogonal to a scanning direction being equivalent to two or more cells of the group of cells. Next, the cell in which fluorescence was detected is irradiated with excitation light for exciting a second fluorescent substance, fluorescence is detected, and position information about the cell in which fluorescence was detected is acquired (second step). At this time, a second detection area is moved to the cell in which fluorescence was detected, the length of the second detection area in the scanning direction and in a direction orthogonal to the scanning direction being equivalent to one or fewer cells of the group of cells. Next, on the basis of the results of detection in the first step and the second step, it is determined whether the cell detected in the first step is a cell of interest (third step).
