Abstract:
Provided is a cermet such that wear resistance and fracture resistance are excellent, and that tool lives are stable. The cermet consists of a first hard phase of a complex carbonitride solid solution, a second hard phase of WC, and a bonded phase which is composed primarily of Co and Ni. The first hard phase is a cored structure consisting of a complex carbonitride solid solution core which satisfies (Ti1-x-y Lx Moy)(C1-zNz), where L denotes at least one type of element that is selected from a group consisting of Zr, Hf, Nb, and Ta, and where x, y, and z satisfy 0.01 ≤ x ≤ 0.5, 0 ≤ y ≤ 0.05, and 0.05 ≤ z ≤ 0.75; and a complex carbonitride solid solution rim which satisfies (Ti1-a-b-d Ra Mob Wd)(C1-eNe), where R denotes at least one type of element that is selected from a group consisting of Zr, Hf, Nb, and Ta, and where a, b, d, and e satisfy 0.01 ≤ a ≤ 0.5, 0 ≤ b ≤ 0.05, 0.01 ≤ d ≤ 0.5, and 0.05 ≤ e ≤ 0.75, respectively. This cermet is characterized in that the number of first hard phase cored structure grains which satisfy 0.2 ≤ (rmin/rmax) ≤ 1 is 85% or more of the total number of first hard phase cored structure grains, where rmax is the maximum thickness of the rim of the first hard phase cored structure grain, and rmin is the minimum thickness of the rim of the first hard phase cored structure grain.
