A contact-type charge roll which contacts an element to be charged and charges by applying voltage including an ac component, and which reduces noise (charge noise) produced from the charge roll, prevents deformation against compression deformation, and can provide stable and good uniform charge characteristics and output image quality. A charge roll comprising at least a support member and a conductive coating member, wherein tan&dgr expressed by a ratio between storage modulus and loss modulus due to dynamic viscoelasticity at 25^°C in the sectional direction of the charge roll is at least 0.2 at 1kHz through 20kHz and up to 0.2 at 1Hz through 10Hz, or a charge roll, wherein the conductive coating member is formed of at least two layers, and at least one layer other than the surface layer has tan&dgr , expressed by a ratio between storage modulus and loss modulus due to dynamic viscoelasticity, of at least 0.2 at 10 Hz and within a 10^°C-50^°C range, and tan&dgr of the entire sectional direction of the charge roll is up to 0.2 at 10 Hz and within a 10^°C-50^°C range.
