Description:

Chimney sealing cap FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[001] The present invention relates generally to chimneys but more particularly to caps crowning chimney tops

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[002] The top of chimneys are exposed to the elements and as such, get damaged This damage can eventually be the cause of fire To remedy that situation, it is important to regularly inspect the top of chimneys and effect the necessary repairs

[003] In order to minimize damage, better chimney caps have been developed over the years but they generally require the work of a skilled craftsman that cuts and folds several pieces of sheet metal in order to create a tight fitting metal cap assembly This work is generally done on site and can be quite expensive That is why, quite often, that step is bypassed and an unskilled worker builds a less than satisfactory chimney cap

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[004] It is a main advantage of this invention to provide a chimney sealing top which is significantly more resistant to damage and at the same time can protect the exterior surfacing of a chimney so that water does not infiltrate and cause damage

[005] In order to do so, the invention has a standard cap and a single-piece crown The single-piece crown is directly attached to a chimney casing The single-piece crown has a hole through which passes a chimney pipe The standard cap is welded to the chimney pot The chimney pipe passes through to the chimney pot The standard cap is slipped over the chimney pipe and fastened onto the single-piece crown using mechanical fasteners

[006] Preferably, the chimney sealing cap has the standard cap further compnsed of a flat part, sides, and a chimney pot extending upwardly from the flat part

[007] The single-piece crown is directly attached to a chimney casing by way of mechanical fasteners passing through holes made into a skirt

[008] The chimney pot is welded to the flat part

[009] In a preferred embodiment, mechanical fasteners are used for securing the single-piece crown onto the chimney casing , and the standard cap is slipped over and is fastened onto the single-piece crown by mechanical fasteners passing through standard cap holes

[0010] Preferably, the standard cap has built-in flaps to divert water

[001 1 ] The one-piece construction is ιn-shop assembled, welded, and quality controlled, including watertight tests, something unachievable on-site This combination of known manufactuπng techniques results in a new and unexpected chimney sealing cap which has the advantages of having a final field installation that is very simple, and performed quickly by unskilled labor Also the end product is a chimney sealing cap with a much extended life-cycle Water and ice infiltration are eliminated which reduces damages to the chimney and its immediate surroundings

[0012] The foregoing and other objects, features, and advantages of this invention will become more readily apparent from the following detailed description of a preferred embodiment with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein the preferred embodiment of the invention is shown and described, by way of examples As will be realized, the invention is capable of other and different embodiments, and its several details are capable of modifications in various obvious respects, all without departing from the invention Accordingly, the

drawings and description are to be regarded as illustrative in nature, and not as restrictive

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0013] Fig. 1 Exploded view of the invention

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0014] A chimney sealing cap (10) is comprised of a standard cap (12) and a single-piece crown (14) The single-piece crown (14) is directly attached to a chimney casing (16) by way of mechanical fasteners (not shown) passing through holes (17) made into a skirt (19) The standard cap is further comprised of a flat part (1 1 ) sides (15), and a chimney pot (22) extending upwardly from the flat part (1 1 )

[0015] The single-piece crown (14) has a chimney hole (18) through which passes a chimney pipe (20) The chimney pipe (20) then goes on through to the chimney pot (22) The chimney pot (22) is welded to the flat part (11) at the manufacturing stage and is also water tested for leakage during that stage in a specialized shop

[0016] Mechanical fasteners are used for securing the single-piece crown (14) onto the chimney casing (16) Once the single-piece crown (14) is

mechanically fastened onto the chimney casing (16), the standard cap (12) is slipped over and is fastened onto the single-piece crown (14), again, using mechanical fasteners (not shown) passing through standard cap holes (13)

The hole (18) provides the added feature of a self-centering guide for the on-site assembly of the chimney pipe (20) The one-piece crown (14) fits snuggly over the entire chimney casing (16) to prevent any infiltration While The standard cap (12) has built-in flaps (24) to further divert water
