Provided are: a chromogenic composition containing a compound represented by formula (1) (in the formula, each symbol is as defined in the description); and a chromogenic composition which has excellent chromogenicity and fades less over time in a planographic printing original plate containing the chromogenic composition in an image recording layer thereof. Also, provided are: a planographic printing original plate which has excellent visibility due to the chromogenicity, which can maintain excellent visibility over time, which exhibits good on-press developability, has excellent white-light stability, and has good printing durability and tone reproducibility; and a method for producing a planographic printing plate using the planographic printing original plate. Furthermore, provided is a chromogenic compound which has excellent chromogenicity and fades less over time. This compound represented by formula 1 has at least one of the groups represented by formulae (2)-(4) (in the formulae, each symbol is as defined in the description) as R4 or R5 or in R1, Ar1, or Ar2.
